Unlike other gemstones which are mineral origin, coral is organic origin. Coral is found deep under sea water.  Coral is formed from organic, called polyps. When the polyps are dead the skeletons of these polyps are used for the formation of gemstones. Coral are very sensitive in nature and its hardness is 3.4 to 4. 
Coral is found only in tropical to subtropical environments. Regions producing coral include the Red Sea, the Midway Islands, the Canary Islands, the Taiwan and Malaysian Coast, the coast of Australia, Italy, (Sardinia), and Hawaii. Coral contain calcium carbonate, which is very helpful for bones. It comes in a wide range of colors, with black, red and pink considered the most valuable.
Many people think that coral must be protected or in danger species. However, some of the threats monitored by the international law. Some type of coral grows very slowly, at the expected rate of three centimeters every 20 years. Other branching estimated to grow 10 centimeters each year.
